NOT SCHOOL IN A SMALLER ROOM

Study Studio grew from a question:

What if children learnt literacy and numeracy because they had a reason to use them?

To read because they want to discover something.

To write because they have something to communicate.

To use numbers because there's a real problem to solve.

To measure because they're actually making something.

To research because there's something they genuinely want to know.

Study Studio brings together intentional teaching and meaningful application, so children aren't only learning skills — they're discovering what those skills allow them to do.

PURPOSE BEFORE PRODUCT

At the heart of Study Studio is a simple idea:

Give the learning a reason.

Instead of beginning with “What worksheet are we doing today?”, we can begin with a problem, question, project or purpose.

Children might design and run a little café, investigate something they've discovered, create a guide for other children, plan an event, conduct a survey, write instructions, work within a budget or collaborate on a group project.

Suddenly literacy and numeracy have a job to do.

Reading helps us find out.
Writing helps us communicate.
Numbers help us understand, compare, plan and solve.

And when children need a skill, they don't yet have?

That's where intentional teaching comes in.

YES, WE TEACH.

Study Studio isn't about waiting and hoping children happen to learn everything through play.

As a qualified primary teacher, Tyler will intentionally teach literacy and numeracy skills, notice where children need support, introduce new concepts and provide opportunities to practise them.

The difference is that wherever possible, those skills are then brought back into something meaningful.

There is guidance. There is explicit teaching. There is practice.

But there is also choice, conversation, curiosity, movement, collaboration and room for children to think for themselves.

Agency within a thoughtfully guided environment.

WHAT LEARNING MIGHT LOOK LIKE

Rather than every child completing exactly the same task at exactly the same level, one shared experience can create opportunities for different levels of learning.

Imagine the group decides to create a café.

One child might count cups, write labels and measure ingredients.

Another might double a recipe, add prices and take orders.

An older child might work out cost per serve, calculate change or manage a budget.

They're participating in the same meaningful experience, while being supported and extended at the level that's right for them.

That's the kind of learning we want Study Studio to make possible.

MORE THAN LITERACY + NUMERACY

Study Studio will intentionally develop core academic skills, but we don't believe those skills exist in isolation.

Our days will also create opportunities for:

Persistence · Collaboration · Self-trust · Independence

There will be group projects.

There will be questions we don't immediately know the answer to.

There will be ideas that don't work the first time.

There will be opportunities to explain your thinking, listen to somebody else's, ask for help, change direction and contribute something to the group.

Because learning how to learn, think and work with others matters too.

A RHYTHM THAT LEAVES ROOM TO LEARN

Study Studio will run as a full homeschool day, with a rhythm that balances focused learning with projects, movement, social connection and time to reset.

ARRIVE + CONNECT

A relaxed start to settle in and connect with the group.

FOCUSED LEARNING

Intentional literacy and numeracy teaching, activities and practice based on the needs of the children.

MOVE + PLAY

Morning tea, movement and time to connect with friends.

INQUIRY + PROJECTS

Questions, investigations, collaborative projects and real-world experiences where skills can be put to use.

LUNCH + CONNECTION

Time to eat, talk, play and simply be together.

CREATE + APPLY

Continue a project, solve a problem, write, research, design, calculate, make or follow an idea further.

REFLECT + SHARE

A chance to share discoveries, recognise progress and close the day together.

The rhythm gives our day structure without needing every child to learn the same thing at the same time.

SMALL-GROUP LEARNING

Study Studio is intentionally being designed as a small-group homeschool environment.

That gives us the flexibility to notice what individual children understand, where they're getting stuck, what they're ready for next and what genuinely interests them.

It also allows children of different ages and abilities to work alongside one another — sometimes learning, sometimes helping and sometimes bringing completely different strengths to the same project.
